Memory
What the agent remembers between sessions, how to add, share and forget notes, and how it finds earlier conversations even after compaction.
Available now. A current user-facing path exists within the stated scope.
What the agent remembers
Memory is a set of notes the agent saves and reads back at the start of a session: project notes stay with that folder, and notes kept everywhere follow you into every project.
The agent writes a note when it learns something worth keeping, and you can write your own. Keys and tokens are masked before a note is written.
Bandicot also reads, as hints, what Claude Code and Codex remember for the same project. It only reads them; their files stay as those tools left them.
Open the Memory pane
Double-tap ⌘ to open Home, then choose Account › Memory.
The pane has two tabs. Memory holds the notes. Brain shows knowledge, decisions and the local decision engine, with recent decision receipts.
The scope switch picks This project or Everywhere. Filter notes searches them. Hover a note to see where it is kept and who wrote it, for example Written by you, or the chat the agent wrote it in.
Check the Brain tab
The Brain tab of the Memory pane shows which models are working for you now and the receipts of recent System One decisions.
Under Current brain, Reasoning model names the provider and model that answer your turns, and Decision model names the one that makes System One decisions, or reads Not configured. Worker readiness and Decision readiness read Ready or say why not.
Recent decision receipts lists saved decisions, each with the model, how long it took, and whether it was applied or only shadow. Refresh reads them again. Saving receipts is optional, so the list may read No saved decision receipts. Collection is optional.
Keep a lesson the agent learned
When a tool call failed and a later call to the same tool worked, a toast asks Remember this for next time?, and pressing Keep saves it as a project note.
The toast shows a short title, such as the tool and the error, and comes from Memory. Bandicot works it out from the turn itself, so it costs no model tokens, and it offers at most three a turn. Keys are masked in the text, and a call that touched a private place is never offered.
Nothing is saved until you press Keep; then the toast Kept in project memory confirms it. Ignore the toast and nothing is written. A refusal or an interruption you caused is not offered as a lesson.
Where notes live and how big they can be
Project notes are plain files in the project's .bandicot/memory folder and notes kept everywhere are in ~/.config/bandicot/memory.
At the start of a session the agent is shown an index of your notes, cut off at the limits below. A note is a Markdown file, so you can read or edit it in any editor. If .bandicot or its memory folder is a link that points out of the project, Bandicot does not use it and the agent is told to replace the link with a folder.
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| One note | 256 KiB, text and title together. |
| Index shown at session start | 200 lines or 25 KiB, whichever comes first. |
| Notes in the Memory pane | 1000. |
context lookup | A query of 1 to 512 bytes; up to 3 notes, 12 KiB in all and 2 KiB each. |
If it goes wrong
note is too large- Split the note into two or shorten it.
the project memory store is a symlink out of the project, so it is not used- Replace the
.bandicotor.bandicot/memorylink with a real folder. brain context lookup is disabled in Settings > Capabilities- Turn the brain context lookup back on in Settings ›
Capabilities. no memory named …- The name given to forget matches no note. Check it in the Memory pane.
Add a note yourself
Press New note, give it a title, write what the agent should remember, and press Save.
Write it as a plain fact or rule, such as which command runs the tests. Choose Everywhere first for a note every project should see.
- Open Memory and choose
This projectorEverywhere. - Press
New note. - Fill in
TitleandWhat should the agent remember?. - Press
Save.
Forget a note
Open the note, press Forget, then press Forget for good to delete it.
You can also ask the agent to forget something; it uses the same action. Open in Finder shows the note's file on disk.
If it goes wrong
This note is no longer on disk- It was deleted or moved outside Bandicot. Reopen the pane to refresh the list.
Could not forget the note- Try again. If it repeats, use
Open in Finderto check the file is still there.
How the agent finds things
The agent's memory tool can remember, recall, list context and forget, and recall searches notes, past chats, what teammates shared, file history, or all of them.
With an embedding model on the Rack, recall matches meaning as well as words, and a reranker can order the best matches. Without one, it matches words. A question about something never written returns nothing.
Nothing is lost to compaction. A compacted chat stays searchable: the agent's history tool searches and reads earlier conversations of the project, including turns compaction removed from its context. In the chat, a quiet History card shows what it found and opens the conversation at that message.
recall takes a from choice: notes (the default), chats, team, versions or all. Every choice except notes and team needs words to search for, and a question with none is refused.
Tidy-up suggestions
While the Mac is idle on the charger, Bandicot proposes merging notes that repeat or contradict each other, and nothing changes until you keep a suggestion.
Each suggestion offers to keep one merged note, keep the newer note, or hide both. With a Laya model on the Rack, more of this runs on this Mac. Use Jev for memory decisions lets TypeSafe make these calls instead, and sends the note text to TypeSafe.
Share notes with your team
In a project shared with a team, Share with team sends one note to your teammates and Share all with team sends every note.
Notes teammates shared show under From teammates. Notes from people who left the team move aside: the agent no longer reads them, and you can keep them for review or delete them. Team channels covers teams.
Notes on your other Macs
Your notes follow the Macs you paired, and a note changed on two Macs keeps the newer one and a conflict copy of the other.
A Mac you removed receives no later notes. Your Macs explains pairing.
Memory from Terminal
bandicot brain reads and writes the same notes from Terminal, and bandicot history searches past chats with the app closed.
bandicot brain context, recall, remember and forget work on the current folder; add --global for notes kept everywhere. Command line has the details.
Questions
Does Bandicot remember things between chats?
Yes. The agent saves notes and reads them back at the start of each session. Project notes stay with the folder; notes kept everywhere follow you.
How do I make the agent forget something?
Open Memory, open the note, press Forget, then Forget for good. Or ask the agent to forget it.
Does compaction lose what was said earlier?
No. The agent's history tool can search and read the whole conversation, including turns compaction removed.
